I hope all our readers are enjoying the summer months. Unlike northern Europe, Menorca is fortunate enough to get an additional one or two months of the sunny season, and at ROQUETA we look forward to that.
It seems to have been a busy time over the peak season. Plenty of visitors enjoying the many facilities on offer on the island, as well as the ever-popular beaches and restaurants. Unlike some who live here all year, we don’t get uptight about not getting a table at a favourite restaurant or finding a queue at our preferred supermarket. We celebrate the fact that these visitors are providing a living for the commercial enterprises that then remain available to us all year.
We also celebrate Jet2’s announcement that they will start flights for their 2020 season a month early. Along with easyJet operating all year from Gatwick, this means access to the island has become easier, if not perfect.
For this month, we have the ever-dependable team of regular contributors writing interesting articles, and the Local News full of intriguing stories. Look out also for eating out, fashion trends and seasonal recipes. Added to this we have some thought-provoking historical pieces that help put into context Menorca’s role in European history over the centuries.
The photographic competition for readers has proven to be very popular again, and we have had a number of excellent entries. They display the diversity and beauty of the island, with the creative execution of the photographer frequently offering a different perspective on familiar subjects. Congratulations to Barbara Bett, the winner of this summer competition.
We hear about and attend numerous events over the course of the year which help demonstrate to us that a lot of people with an interest in the future wellbeing of Menorca are busy making and delivering plans. We know that this is often a frustrating process, but with perseverance, organisations are making important advances. A perfect example of this is the opening of the Hauser & Wirth International Art Gallery on the Isla del Rey which has been confirmed for Spring 2020.
Enjoy September, the creeping towards autumn is a favourite time of year for us at the magazine.
