Welcome Back! Or perhaps greetings if you are a first time or occasional reader.
ROQUETA tries to provide a good spread of articles over a range of subjects to hopefully tickle every fancy. We always have good representation from the charities and societies on the island who arrange very busy and full itineraries.
This year we are spending more time looking at the environment and sustainability of Menorca. Like most readers, we want to ensure that it remains on the whole natural and unspoilt, so that future generations can enjoy it as much as we do. Today this throws up some new challenges, mainly through the growth in tourist numbers, and this edition covers some of those issues as well as offering some handy hints on how in a small way we all can play our part.
To that end, we have a feature on the new restaurant Solitre which is setting an excellent example in terms of sustainability. We have also introduced a new symbol to help you identify and support restaurants which use ‘Local Produce’.
Menorca’s golf course at Son Parc is undergoing some changes, so we went and enjoyed a game of golf and can report on the improvements being made especially around the clubhouse. It all looks very impressive.
The work there certainly seems to reinforce the view that things in general are improving on the island. The choice and standard of restaurants are better, with some quality options available. Take a look at the Eating Out section for some tips. Things have certainly moved on considerably from the days when most restaurants offered virtually the same menu.
To that end, this month we are running an article on young entrepreneurs. Last year we had a number of interviews with entrepreneurs who set up businesses when the tourist industry started forty years ago and remain successful today. The question posed is whether today we have a new generation stepping up to the plate. As we report, we found plenty of great examples of that happening, most using social media and the internet as key tools in their growth.
The What’s On section is always well used by readers. On an island where the supply of information for events is so last minute, we work hard to try and provide the most comprehensive guide available. This month we present the calendar of events for the Ciutadella fiesta, the first to take place every year. This is a true spectacle but can be quite wild, so we do not advise attending with young children or the elderly.
It has been a grim winter here, much wetter than usual, so we are now looking forward to some summer sun on our backs to thaw and dry us out.
