August has been an interesting month in the world of ROQUETA.
It is traditionally the month when most people do as little as possible as it is so hot. And this August seems to have broken most records on that front. We have had amazing hot spells when even the hardiest of residents have been complaining and generally people are walking about like the sleeping dead as they have had restless nights tossing and turning and taking frequent showers to cool down.
Well, rest assured. The ROQUETA team have ignored the blistering conditions, battled through dehydration, fought off fatigue and crankiness and made some interesting discoveries which we bring to you in this edition.
Craig, ever enthusiastic and completely oblivious to the conditions, introduces us to the Camí de Cavalls. He is going to encourage us to join him (metaphorically as he walks too fast) in discovering the coastline of Menorca by having a go. I have ‘had a go’ in the cooler months, and found some idyllic little beaches for a swim and a picnic.
Rachael is our in-house mermaid and for the first time shares with us what we will find when we don the snorkel and mask. She reassures me that the barracuda and other fearsome looking fish are quite safe and friendly.
Even your intrepid Ed ventured forth and was invited on a Jeep Safari that ended up on the north coast with a glass of wine and the sunset. It was a quite amazing experience, discovering gorges and ravines that I never knew existed. We spotted eagles flying above us, walked over ancient ruins, and as for the Romans, we found more bits of their pots and pans lying about than we could get excited about in the end.
Of course, the regular contributors always have interesting things to share with us. Glennis manages to get Donald Trump into her gardening piece about ‘assisted migration’, and yes, it is about plants. No mention of Brexit though, thank goodness. Javier goes insect focused so if you are a little squeamish look away now.
And what about the forthcoming Catalan elections. Mary is as ever up front with her views as to what may or more probably may not happen. But at least you will know why if the island is suddenly awash with flags at the end of the month.
Introducing an international sportsperson brought up here: Chloe Morris has represented Spain in dressage, and we ask her about the challenges that faced her on this journey.
But the big deal in September is the fiesta in Mahón. We have a particular focus on the city, both during and around the fiesta. It’s an exciting and noisy time, full of energy. Go along and see the horses and pageantry. Learn about the giants who play a big visual part of the procession with our article that met the team behind (underneath?) them. It is like stepping back in time, and all the better for the preservation of important local culture and traditions. (Please note – fiestas are noisy and crowded so not suited for everyone).
We never forget the local community who remain busy themselves. We are delighted to report an increasing number of meetings and events where they do such a fine job supporting the Menorcan community.
Enjoy the September edition, and as always, I would love to hear from you with comments and suggestions.
And don’t miss the opportunity to give one (or more) of your friends and family a monthly copy of ROQUETA as the perfect Christmas present. Visit https://roquetamagazine.net/subscribe/ for the details.
