As the season is coming to a close, I thought that it would therefore be interesting to review and reflect on 2016 to see how the operators and residents have found it, and to look at 2017 and what to expect in the future.I am therefore delighted that we have managed to secure interviews with two of the most influential people in relation to this

The first is an extensive interview with Señor Biel Barceló, Vice President, Govern de les Illes Balears and the Minister responsible for Tourism on the Islands. The second is with Tomás Melgar, the Director of the Airport.
These interviews come on top of the very informative one with the Mayor of Mahón in the September issue. We all appreciate that developing this strategy comes with many issues and is complicated. We all appreciate that developing this strategy comes with many issues and is complicated. For Menorca, the Island has managed to steer clear of the rowdier elements that the other islands have to cope with, and to focus on the unique treasures that we have to offer. And then when a strategy is realised, the implementation will always need co-operation and almost certainly financial investment which is more of a challenge than ever before.

This can then be channelled into an article in the future, and certainly relayed back to those we have interviewed. I am sure they would be very interested in the views of those at the sharp end of delivering tourism, from tourists themselves and those living here.

As far as the 2016 season is concerned, the number of visitors is up, but still seemed to be within the infrastructure capacity of what can be handled. This is in contrast to some of the other Balearic Islands that have faced some real issues during the high season. The summer has seen the usual high energy Fiestas across the Island, and this is something that many visitors visit for its pomp and ceremony. The beaches have been busy, and we have seen pinch points of tourists is some areas such as Mahón and Ciutadella harbours.
